about
Anchor and Adjust is the second single and title track taken from the upcoming debut album from Melbourne Synth-pop duo SYZYGY. It is a song about power, the difference between perception and truth and the control of information.
Taking inspiration from cognitive bias theory and the idea that once an anchor of belief is set, all subsequent understanding is then tied to that initial belief - rightly or wrongly.
Developed in the depths of a long 3 month lockdown, they took the opportunity of time and space to experiment with new techniques and sounds - a slight departure from their usual high energy pop. A focus on simple bass heavy synth melodies with dancey yet subdued qualities, but retaining the drive through snappy reverb treated drums. The vocals push to a higher, more ethereal register and play with intertwining and looping vocal lines.
lyrics
I listened when you said it
Allowed that to define it
You drew the shape with meaning
I traced it back from the memory of
the first time I knew I could believe it
The instinct is make it truth
Anchoring
Hold to the need
Concede the adjustments
Subtly
Suggest the mark
You start the reference
Arbitrary
Fail all the
outside assessments
Anchoring
Influence is the fault
It became the foundation
And I just dug my heels in
To erase intuitive
evaluation of the problems is easier
Than admit you can be led
Now can’t abstain or break the chain
Anchoring
Hold to the need
Concede the adjustments
Subtly
Suggest the mark
You start the reference
Arbitrary
fail all the
outside assessments
Anchoring
Hard to avoid
Implied importance
